Closer than it felt

Kyiv felt far away.
Lisboa is farther from home.

When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, I was in Lisboa. Kyiv felt so far away. But measured from my home in Kössen, Tirol, Lisboa is the more distant city.

Two lines share an origin in Kössen, Tirol: one goes southwest to Lisboa, 2,003 km away; the other northeast to Kyiv, 1,356 km away. — Both lines start in **Kössen**—not Lisboa. This projection preserves distances from that shared origin.

Lisboa is 647 km farther from Kössen than Kyiv.
Distance on a map and distance in the mind are not always the same.

Calculation, not an estimate. WGS84 ellipsoidal geodesics calculated with Python’s pyproj.Geod: Lisboa 2,002.934 km; Kyiv 1,356.105 km. Main labels rounded to the nearest kilometer. These are distances between published place reference coordinates, not a home address, road route or flight path.

Projection: ellipsoidal azimuthal equidistant, centered on Kössen. Distances and directions from Kössen are preserved; the coast is generalized. The map does not measure Lisboa–Kyiv distance or claim to quantify a feeling.
